Description: Among the eight classes of drugs available to control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes, the newest class is the sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, or 'gliflozins', which includes canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and empagliflozin. These recently introduced medications are widely predicted to become commonly used in type 2 diabetes. There are now concerns of some common, and some rare but serious, hazards that may be associated with these medications in the perioperative setting.
